NSO: On Illegitimate Children

Bonjour. Mabuhay.

This is an interesting though sad fact in our country today. These are what the latest data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) revealed.

An average of 4,782 births occurs daily, which is around 199 births per hour, or three babies per minute, as mentioned by an NSO data.

Four of every 10 babies born in the country are illegitimate
…and one of them came from a teenage mother, that makes 25% of illegitimate children coming from teenage pregnancy.

Eventually this will lead to concerns such as NSO registration procedure inquiries like:

What is the rule on the registration of births of illegitimate children who were born prior to August 3, 1988?

May an illegitimate child born on or after August 3, 1988 carry the surname of the father if the father executes an affidavit of admission of paternity?

Other data includes the following:

There are a the total of 711,079 illegitimate babies recorded: 64.6 percent of which came from Luzon, 11.2 percent live births were born to mothers under 20 years old.

The top three regions with the highest number of live births were in Luzon area, namely, CALABARZON, National Capital Region, and Central Luzon with 204,148. The NSO also noted that three out of four births are medically attended by either by a physician, a nurse or a midwife. The percentage of medically attended births increased from previous years value by 70.9 percent.
