7 Important Steps When Planning Your Civil Wedding

Due to the current restrictions on social gatherings, more and more couples choose to get married under civil rights. This is often regarded as the “more affordable” way of tying the knot but now that there is a pandemic and people’s movements are limited, a civil wedding is not only budget-friendly, but it is also the most sensible choice for everyone’s safety.

If you are planning to have a civil wedding ceremony soon, here are 7 important things you need to accomplish to be sure that your wedding is seamless and organized.

  1. Decide on your wedding date.

Give yourselves at least a month to work on the documents, attend seminars, and shop for clothes and rings – it might take more time than you think. To see the list of documentary requirement, please see my previous blog.

Your PSA certificate of live birth and CENOMAR are two of the most important documents you need when applying for a marriage license. If you order online at www.psahelpline.ph, you can get your PSA documents in 3 to 4 working days (if within Metro Manila) and 7 to 8 working days if outside Metro Manila.

Your marriage license will be released 10 days after you have submitted all documentary requirements and attended the mandatory pre-wedding seminar at your city or municipal hall.

2. Determine your budget.

Who says you cannot have a nice wedding reception, complete with a short program and wedding souvenirs? Of course, you can! And that is why you need to determine your budget ahead of time.

Here is a list of the items to include in your budget:

  • Wedding attire of bride and groom (clothes and shoes)
  • Wedding rings
  • Hair and make-up of bride
  • Bouquet
  • Wedding documents
  • Solemnizing officer’s fees
  • Restaurant fees (wedding reception)
  • Wedding cake
  • Wedding photographer
  • Souvenirs

3. Secure a marriage license.

You must go to a Local Civil Registrar’s office to apply for a marriage license. There are some municipalities that offer online marriage license application so it’s best that you check with your city or municipal hall.  If they do, we recommend that you send your application online as it is safer and more economical.

Your PSA certificate of live birth (birth certificate) and PSA CENOMAR will be required of you when you apply for a marriage license. Good news is you can get both online too at www.psahelpline.ph.

4. Determine who will officiate at your wedding.

Any one of the following can officiate a civil wedding:

  • The mayor of your city or municipality.
  • A judge
  • Military commanders, airplane chiefs, or ship captains.
  • Any pastor, minister, priest, Imam, or rabbi of any church or religious sect.
  • Consuls in Philippine Embassies abroad.

5. Plan your wedding reception.

This part of the wedding planning and preparation that has been greatly altered by the pandemic. Large gatherings are frowned upon now and even friends and relatives have their reservations about going out and mingling with others for extended hours.

Therefore, you need to closely inspect your guest list and decide who you want to be present at your wedding reception and the likelihood of these individuals to attend or not.  At the end of the day, you would want everyone to be comfortable and out of harm’s way.

6. Hire a wedding photographer and videographer.

Just because you are having a civil wedding does not mean you cannot document the event like the meaningful life milestone it truly is. Hire a wedding photographer and videographer and have a pre-nup session!  Have them take photos and videos of your “road to my forever”, create a same-day edit video, and a coffee table book-type photo album that you and your spouse can cherish through the years! You can send the photos and videos to your friends and families who cannot attend your wedding or publish these on your social media channels. It’s a fun and meaningful way to share your joy as a newly-married couple with the rest of the world.

7. Enjoy your wedding!

Remember, it isn’t just kasal sa huwes.  It is your wedding, and you are doing it the way you prefer to do it. Bask in the joy of tying the knot with the person you truly love and want to spend the rest of your life with. Whether there are 10 or 10,000 people in attendance, what is truly important is that you are marrying the one person you cannot live without. That is what truly matters.

Best wishes!
